History and culture of Kuakata: Name and location

The name Kuakata is derived from the word “Kuya,” meaning “well” or “water that comes from the ground.” It is believed that the Arakanese were driven out of Burma by the Mughal rulers in the 18th century. They landed on Rangabali Island, off the coast of the Bay of Bengal, and settled in what is now Kuakata.

There was a problem with the drinking water, so many wells were dug here. That’s how the region got its name, Kuakata. This is a common idea, and we found this information almost everywhere, including on Wikipedia. However, this information may not be entirely accurate.

Kuakata is a pilgrimage site for Buddhist and Hindu communities. Countless devotees attend the holy Ras Purnima and Maghi Purnima festivals here. During these festivals, pilgrims take a holy bath in the bay and participate in the traditional fair.

Kuakata is located in the Kalapara Upazila of the Patuakhali District. Situated in the southern part of Bangladesh, it is about 320 kilometers (200 mi) south of Dhaka and 70 kilometers from the Patuakhali district headquarters.
